Aboard a sailing ship heading through the south pacific 20 castaways scavenge the ship for supplies when Jeff Probst announces they will be divided along racial lines. On the trip in some of the contestants have reservations about the tribe makeup and will it play into racial stereotypes, others feel it will give them an opportunity to excel.

The Latin tribe feels they have advantage with the climate and working together. The Asian tribe is having some difficulties getting along. The African tribe is going through culture shock since they are all city dwellers. The Causation tribe celebrates with a coconut until Jessica Smith Flicka - Flicka lets the chicken's escapes

The Manihiki tribe is excited about finding water. Rebecca Borman and Sundra Oakley are getting along really well which worries Stephannie Favor. Sekou Bunch tries to start a fire but is unsuccessful and takes a long break noticed by the tribe. Over in the Rarotonga tribe Candice Woodcock s sleeping next to Adam Gentry for warmth. In the Puka Puka tribe Cao Boi Boi is performing rituals to remove bad vibes and a headache.

The Aitutaki tribe gets tree mail informing them there is an immunity and reward challenger today. Johnathan Penner gets fingered for stealing the chicken. The challenge consists of building a raft rowing out get pieces, come back assemble a puzzle and light a fire at the top of a ladder. The prize is the first three teams get flint and immunity. The first tribe will also get additional materials to make a fire. There is also a secret message after the tribe. Aitutaki and Puka puka are first in the water. Puka is the first to get to the puzzle followed by Aitutaki. Puka Puka wins coming in first and Aitutaki is close behind. Manihiki Tribe is in last slightly ahead of Rarotonga. Manihiki comes in last, however they get to send someone to Exile Island. They send Johnathan Penner who stole the chicken to Exile Island.

On Exile Island Johnathan Penner realizes he was picked for stealing the chicken and starts to work on figuring out where the hidden immunity island. At Manhiki they realize they have to send someone home. The girls group up and so do they guys, both start to conspire on who to vote out. The men figure out they aren't going to get someone to come over and start to work on Stephannie Favor to break up Sundra Oakley and Rebecca Borman.

At tribal council Jeff instructs the people to take their torches. Rebecca Borman admits Sekou Bunch took an early leadership role. Nate says the tribe has sense of family and spirit. They find it funny that tribes were divided up along tribe lines. Sundra Oakley realizes she bonded with Rebecca Borman and the men stuck together. Sekou Bunch is the first person voted out.
